You’ve all probably heard of the term “Digital Data“, which is “data that represents other forms of data using specific machine language systems that can be interpreted by various technologies”. It seeks to “capture elements of the physical world and simulate them for technological use”. Digital data is the distinct and specific pieces of information that can be accessed through means of electronic devices, which can be numerical or alphabetical. Data is really becoming a crucial part of our daily life and is exchanged with almost every transaction we do. Meaning, all information present on the internet, laptops or phones can be considered as digital data.
My first experience with Digital Data was since I entered school. PowerPoint, videos/films and even music were always a tool used by teachers to help us as students to grasp the idea of any topic or even learn how to read. Later on, when we got a bit older and wiser, we started to learn how to actually use devices such as computers. That is when we were introduced to “The Internet” and search engines which we used to assist ourselves in doing assignments, completing projects, and even just surfing the web to gain some general knowledge.

In addition, when I was a student at school, I took a filming class. We were required to work on projects throughout the year and participated in many competitions. I had to translate the ideas and scenarios I had in mind, the things I saw in the world through digital information, using my camera and editing tools including picking themes and music for the videos. Moreover, this summer I had the chance to intern at Deloitte. As an Audit Intern, all the work I had to do included digital data. I used an Auditing Software where all types of data were stored, including, balance sheets, employee salaries, contracts between certain companies, and much more. And in order to complete the Audit process, analysis of previous and current data sets should be done. Working with these systems also allows to produce data in different digital forms Excel, Pdf, Graph, Pivot table…Etc. based on request which is frequently used to extract reports about financial statements.

However, on the contrary to what I’ve stated before. I don’t think that people are really aware of the danger that technology creates. It is right to say that it had positively changed our lives; yet, users have the tendency to forget the risks they are exposed to. Privacy and confidentiality are at stake when talking about this matter and I believe that privacy is a matter that should be more appropriately respected. Many companies can store and use our data as a mechanism to target customers like us or brainwash us into purchasing their products or services.
